 Children cycling to school

Arriving at school by bike gives children a good start to the day. Not only do they arrive more alert but regular exercise can help children be fitter and reduce the likelihood of becoming overweight. Most schools actively encourage more children to cycle to school and have provided facilities such as cycle parking so that bikes stay secure during the school day.

School Travel Plans

School travel plan is a package of measures to encourage pupils and parents to walk or cycle to school. The measures vary depending on the needs of the school.  If your school already has a travel plan, it could apply for a capital grant to improve or support walking or cycling.

Safer Routes to school

These projects seek to improve safety on the journey to school and thus increase walking and cycling levels. Using an individually designed package of both practical and educational measures, 'Safe Routes to School' aims to improve road safety, reduce congestion, reduce child casualties and improve children's health and fitness.  Examples can include cycle parking, cycle paths, parking restrictions and street lighting to make the route to school safer. The local authorities can support your school to prepare a travel plan.

Contact your local authority to find out how we can help your school develop 'Safe Routes to School’.
