Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils are leading on the Cycling City project, working with Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset councils to promote cycling across the region.
The Better By Bike roadshow team meet all sorts of people when they're out and about. Some super-keen bikers, some every day people and some just getting to grips with using bicycles to get around the city.
Recently the team met members of the Environment Agency's Bicycle User Group (BUG), which is made up of lots of different types of riders. Some of the BUG members explained why they love using their bikes:
I live about three miles away and there is a bus, but I really wanted to give cycling a go. I hadn’t really been on a bike for 15 years, since living in Oxford, another cycle city but a lot quieter on the roads.
I was terrified and put of buying a bike for about four months. Then I final got my act together to get a bike on the cycle to work scheme. I did plan to do lots of preparation and practicing, but the terrible winter weather put me off.
My first day at Horizon House was a sunny morning, so I decide to just bite the bullet and do it! I was really nervous about the traffic, so took a nice scenic route down the back roads. It may be a little bit longer but I really enjoy seeing bits of the city that are new.
I was even more nervous about the hills on the way home! – I went with a friend on the first return trip and it was actually fine. I was surprised to find I was not as unfit as I thought and it gets easier every time.
There is one short, almost vertical hill, which I push the bike up. But by the end of the year I will be able to cycle it!
I now cycle three times a week and really love it. It clears my head in the morning and the trip home actually helps to me to relax. I find it faster than the bus and my son now moans if I don’t take him to school on the bike.
